Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Kayak Challenge?

  • 9.0 miles

How long will it take?

  • Short answer: 3.5 - 5.0 hrs

  • Long answer: Paddling straight through with no stopping it would take ~ 3hrs. However, this is a leisurely endeavor and there is at least one stop built in.

What is the route?

  • The start is at Canalfront Park in Lewes, DE. There is a kayak launch and plenty of parking. The finish is in Dewey Beach, DE, adjacent to the Rudder/Lighthouse/Hyatt.

  • Typically, the group will stop at the mouth of the Rehoboth Bay on the beach at Thompson Island for refreshments (BYOB) before the final push to Dewey.

Where can I rent a Kayak?

I'm not in great shape, nor have I kayaked before, will I be able to participate?

  • YES! We have had many, wary first timers complete the Challenge with relative ease. The date and time of the event is selected to use the tide to our advantage. Aside from a headwind, you will be paddling "downhill". If you are still nervous, consider paring up with someone in a double kayak to diffuse the physical responsibility.

Are life-jackets required?

  • Technically yes, according to Coast Guard regulations life jackets must be with you and within reach on your vessel. However, this is a grassroots event, and you can make the decision to comply for yourself.

What do I do with my kayak at the end?

  • Participants arrange for their own transportation of their vessel off of the beach by the Rusty Rudder at the completion of the journey. There is a decent amount of room there for landing of the kayaks, and it isn't terribly urgent to have the beach vacated. But it would be best practice to have them moved for the evening.

  • If you are renting a kayak, be sure to ask about pickup services.

  • If you have no way to transport your kayak, find a spot to lock it up along the dock/fence in the beach area. You may need to take it over to the Hyatt beach area where there is more space.

    • Pro Tip: Leaving a truck in Dewey works well.
